Speech and Language Workshop 22/2/17

Speech and Language Workshop 22/2/17
Vocabulary
Develop the ability to listen
Have vocabulary
Understand concepts- time, colours, position, sequencing
Linking ideas
Imaginative use of language
Vocabulary is a foundation skill that builds on all language development and activities. Vocabulary is the understanding of words and words that are used.
Links between vocab and literacy- the most important skill in the language development and success in sounds. The importance of building vocabulary is essential.
Listening
Check all hearing…
Hearing sounds- discriminating sounds- tuning into sounds- speech sounds frequencies- identify chunks and word types/word breaks- match sound pattern to known sound patterns,- then access the meaning with known sound pattern
Speaking
access meaning with known sound pattern- match sound sequence, identify and relevant grammar- the blend speech sounds and articulation of speech.
Complex process particularly for children with special needs where is the breakdown in the process
We have to verbalise the meaning of concepts behind the meaning of words. Building the bridges of context and meaning for learning vocabulary.

The Words needed for learning
“every day words” words used in daily conversation, words used in a child’s daily routine, general words that the child is familiar with. Often nouns
“big impact words”  go across a variety of settings, they are going to have impact on the functional understanding. Child is likely to understand the underlying meaning- different context and activities across the school day.  They are concepts words-
“sometimes” words you don’t use very often

Visual Timetable- breakdown the instructions with repetition, check in with instructions, use gestures and actions.

Teaching the concept of “before”
One or two step instructions- when- then…

Thing that help us learn and remember new words
Recency, repetition, previous word knowledge, previous experiences, expression, body language, context provided by surrounding discussion and conversation, short words are easier to store than long word, making links to prefixes and suffixes
The Strategies for vocab development
Everyday ways
talking, conversations, looking for books, songs poems, role plays, class displays, listening post, daily routines, identifying new vocabulary prior to reading or while reading.
Discussing meaning of words throughout the day. Moving from me- real and personal words and then extending concept out- looking at similarities and differences, role play materials, displays of whole class vocabulary choices, images of children with the key vocab

Embedding the big impact words by-
-using vocabulary expansion- adding expanding descriptions- adding word associations e.g. shoes, blue shoes, blue high heel shoes
- Initiation, response, feedback-
-using a commenting wheel-
Explicit instruction
-define the word- making a child friendly definition, refer to experiences, describe using senses (look, feel sound, smell, touch
- use cloze sentence
-contextualise the word- linking the word to prior knowledge, use visuals
-extending the meaning of the word- linking word to unknown words, use word webs, sound pattern- syllables, long and short words, generating rhyming words, identify any words within,  discuss other words that have the same beginning sounds or endings
- review the word at the end of explicit teaching

The big impact word- have it written on a card on the white board to refer back to.

Emotion Coaching 2017

Emotion Coaching

Alissa Jarden
Ideas to Implement
Training for our team members…. LMS teachers
Behaviour Plans for our key children in our Syndicate- practise the skills during Positive Learning Through Play, Discovery Time

Calming Box- create for each class in the syndicate
Calming Space- maybe use the learning spaces between the classrooms- things to do to it.

In Syndicate meetings to have time to talk among the group about behaviour strategies-  Ako partnerships.  Choosing scenarios that we can practise on how to approach these situations

Key idea and points to remember
Use statements like “I am wondering…”
“Is there another way we could do this…”  Checking back with the children...
Linking back to class/school rules-

Emotion Coaching is a strategy in your bank of tools to use when working with children who are not able to self regulate.

Consistent framework when working with behaviour.  Give children understanding to their own emotions

Teaching calming strategies-

Breathing- balloon breathing, butterfly breathing, blowing out the candles, Connex ball breathing

“Hey Sigmund” website- reassurance that they can manage the anxiety not that they don’t have to worry.
What makes them feel better at school.

A feelings moment in the class- to check in… Morning mat session- talk to a friend about how you feeling today… anyone has a feeling to share.. Role model with puppet Sally… review different emotions.
